Ruth 4:12-22
Ruth 4:12
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar
bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
Pharez was the son of Judah and Bethlehem was of the
tribe of Judah. That is why the
southern kingdom was called Judah after the reign of Solomon.
They had wished that the family of Boaz and Ruth would be as numerous as
some of the other larger families in Judah.
The family of Pharez were called Pharzites.
And the sons of Judah after their
families were; of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites: of Pharez, the family of
the Pharzites: of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites.
(Numbers 26:20)
Ruth 4:13
So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went
in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
So Ruth and Boaz became husband and wife and she bore him
a son by means of the LORD giving her conception.
Lo, children are an heritage of
the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
(Psalm 127:3) The
restriction of Israelites marrying a woman of different religion is waived when
she is out of the false religion and has become a true worshipper of the God of
Israel as in the case of Ruth.
Ruth 4:14
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the
LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be
famous in Israel.
These were probably the women who attended Ruth when she
gave birth to the child which was the grandchild of Naomi.
They blessed the LORD that he gave Ruth a kinsman redeemer and not only
that all the children in the line of Boaz and Ruth would lead to the ultimate
kinsman redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ who would redeem millions of people.
The name that would be famous in Israel would eventually be King David
who was also a type of Christ. Here
though they are probably speaking of Boaz in the present.
The LORD’s name was already famous in Israel as they were redeemed by him
from Egypt, so this may be speaking about Boaz or his son Obed.
Ruth 4:15
And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life,
and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee,
which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
Now Ruth will know what happiness is since all she knew
up to this point was sorrow and poverty caused by the death of her husband and
father-in-law. He will also help
her in her old age as she helped Naomi during the hard times she faced.
Ruth will have the privilege of living on a large estate since it will
eventually pass to her son Obed and therefore she will have everything needed
for her life. They told Naomi that
Ruth had loved her and because of the way Ruth treated her, it was better than
seven sons born to Elimelech.
Ruth 4:16
And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and
became nurse unto it.
Then Naomi took the child probably for a little time so
Ruth could regain her strength and took the baby to her bosom to cuddle it
probably after the baby was fed by Ruth.
Ruth 4:17
And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying,
There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the
father of Jesse, the father of David.
Then the women named the baby Obed which means “servant.”
He became the father of Jesse which means “to be my present” who became
the father of David.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon
David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
(1 Samuel 16:13) David
means “beloved or dear.”
Ruth 4:18
Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez
begat Hezron,
And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and
Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of
Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.
(Genesis 46:12)
And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
Ram was otherwise known as Aram.
And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and
Esrom begat Aram; (Matthew 1:3)
And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat
Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah;
(1 Chronicles 2:10)
Ruth 4:20
And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon,
prince of the children of Judah; (1
Chronicles 2:10)
And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz,
(1 Chronicles 2:11)
Ruth 4:21
And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz,
(1 Chronicles 2:11)
And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse,
(1 Chronicles 2:12)
Ruth 4:22
And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse,
(1 Chronicles 2:12)
