NIV 1984
Edition Versus NIV 2011 Edition
Compiled by Will Kinney
Many Christians use the NIV and believe it is a good
version. What Will did here was
make a comparison between the 1984 and 2011 editions.
They stated that they hoped they got it right this time.
As you will see the 2011 engenders just as much confusion as does the
1984 edition. Trying to make a
false version accurate is like going to a garbage dump and thinking that if you
pick out some garbage you can make a steak dinner out of it.
You can’t! If your beginning
source is error and inaccuracy, then your finished product will be filled with
errors and inaccuracies. Once again
the King James Bible shows its superiority when placed against these counterfeit
Roman Catholic translations. – Dr. Ken Matto

him, I will; be thou clean.”
(NIV 1973, 1978, 1984) “FILLED WITH COMPASSION, Jesus reached out his
hand and touched the man.”
(NIV 2011) “Jesus WAS INDIGNANT. He reached out his hand and touched the
man.”
Luke 10:42
(KJB) But ONE THING IS NEEDFUL: and Mary hath chosen that good part,

has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her."
(NIV 2011 edition) "BUT FEW THINGS ARE NEEDED - OR INDEED ONLY ONE. Mary
has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her."

(κεφαλὴν γωνίας)
= literally "head of corner
(NIV 1973, 1978 and 1984 editions) "The stone the builders rejected has become
THE CAPSTONE."
(NIV 2011 edition) "The stone the builders rejected has become THE
CORNERSTONE."
Luke 24:47
(KJB) “And that repentance AND (kai) remission of sins should be preached
in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
(NIV 1984) “and repentance AND forgiveness of sins will be preached in
his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
(NIV 2011) “and repentance FOR the forgiveness of sins will be preached
in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

glory, the glory as THE ONLY BEGOTTEN of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
(NIV 1984) “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen
his glory, the glory of the ONE AND ONLY, who came from the Father, full of

John 7:8-10 - Did Jesus Lie?
(KJB) Go ye up unto this feast: I go NOT up YET unto this feast;
for my time is not yet full come. When he had said these words unto them, he
abode still in Galilee. But when his brethren were gone up, THEN went he
also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
(NIV editions of 1973, 1978 and 1984) "I am NOT YET going up to this
Feast…However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not
publicly, but in secret.”
(2011 edition) has once again changed its underlying Greek texts and now has Jesus lying to His disciples by saying: "You go to this festival. I AM NOT GOING up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come…
However, after his brothers had left for the festival, HE WENT ALSO, not
publicly, but in secret.”
John 21:1
(KJB) “After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea
of TIBERIAS”
(NIV 1984) “Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of
TIBERIAS. ”
(NIV 2011) “Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of
GALILEE.”
[Note: There is no Greek text in all the world that reads “Galilee” here. They
all read Tiberias.]

(NIV 2011 edition) “Cornelius answered: “THREE days ago I was in my house
praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining
clothes stood before me”

free from the law of sin and death.”

are much more bold to speak THE WORD without fear.”

have BEEN ENCOURAGED TO SPEAK the WORD OF GOD MORE COURAGEOUSLY AND FEARLESSLY."
(NIV 2011) "AND because of my chains, most of the BROTHERS AND
SISTERS, have BECOME CONFIDENT IN THE LORD AND DARE ALL THE MORE TO PROCLAIM THE
GOSPEL WITHOUT FEAR."
Note - Did you notice that the "new" NIV has dropped the extra words OF GOD, but
they have added AND SISTERS, which is not found in any text; they completely
re-worded the whole verse, and they changed THE WORD (ton logon) to THE GOSPEL?

loved by the Lord, because God chose you AS FIRSTFRUITS to be saved
through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.”
1 Timothy 3:2
(KJB) A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of ONE WIFE,
vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
The NIV 2011 edition is completely wrong. The specific word ONE IS in all Greek
texts. It is literally "husband of ONE wife"
The NIVs 1973, 1978 and 1984 editions all had it right. They used to read: "the
husband of but ONE wife".
(2011 edition) Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife,
temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
But now the 2011 edition came out and it says: "faithful to his wife" and there
is NO Greek text that reads this way. The word "faithful" simply is NOT there at
all.
μιας γυναικος ανδρα
That little word μιας [mias] is the feminine singular of the Greek word ONE.
Hebrews 11:11
(KJB) "Through faith also SARAH HERSELF received
strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child, when SHE was
past age, because SHE judged him faithful who had promised."

even though HE was past age - AND SARAH HERSELF WAS BARREN - was enabled
to become A FATHER because HE considered him faithful who had made
the promise."
(NIV 2011) "And by faith even SARAH, who was past childbearing age, was enabled
to bear children because SHE considered him faithful who had made the
promise."

God and the song of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God

(NIV 2011) “and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb:
“Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your
ways, King of the NATIONS.”
