Affected Teaching
In the Textus Receptus (King James) the word “keep” is a commandment from the Lord Jesus Christ. It is in the Imperative Mood. The modern versions, by adding the word “will” to “keep” makes it a future action on behalf of the people Jesus is speaking with. Jesus gives a commandment to His followers that if they love Him they are to keep His commandments. The modern versions make it sound like there is no possibility that Jesus’ followers will ever accidentally overlook His commandments. As fallen creatures, even though we are saved, we are still imperfect in following the Lord Jesus Christ. To make a declarative statement that His followers “will” keep His commandments can build discouragement and even depression if a Christian does not follow the future prophecy of the statement of Jesus as written in the modern versions. We all have feet of clay and are imperfect in our following and obedience. The modern versions make it sound like a Christian will be perfect in obedience.
